Beyond a Christmas Carol: New One-Act Immersive Christmas Comedy/Drama

BEYOND A CHRISTMAS CAROL re-imagines Dickens’ holiday classic through the perspective of its supporting female characters. While Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey serves as a backdrop, the story shifts to the women around him (Mrs. Cratchit and her daughters, Scrooge’s sister, his former-love, Belle)—exploring their hopes, struggles, and the effects Scrooge has on their lives. Led by the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future, this interactive comedy/drama, presented in 5 vignettes, gives new breath to a classic story, while honoring Dickens’ themes of compassion, generosity and redemption. I had the absolute joy to create this piece last year for Tagragg Productions, collaborate with a super talented colleague and friend, Erin Coulter, and attend the premiere in the beautiful town of Middleburg, VA. Erin did a spectacular job directing the production—not a small feat when you have a large cast of multiple generations and you’re producing in rotating sets outdoors! But that is also what made this production so unique, engaging and fun! And Erin is one of those brilliant people who meets (honestly, exceeds!) every challenge she encounters. The actors also gave superb performances, keeping up great energy in 16 degree weather (yes, even in Virginia!), interacting with the audience with such endearing charm, and bringing so much to these newly-created or reenvisioned characters. I have to give credit to our stunning audience too, who participated at the fullest and embraced the cold weather and group tour walking together! I was so fortunate to have this team premiere BEYOND A CHRISTMAS CAROL, and will forever appreciate their support (you can read more about the premiere production here). Without Erin and Tagragg, this play not never have existed! I’m pleased to now make the script available to everyone!

Fan (Scrooge’s younger sister) plays Tug-of-War with children from the audience she has invited to join.
Running time:
It runs around 35-45 minutes—more or less depending on how you stage it.
Scenes:
There are six (6) vignettes/scenes, including 1 monologue, each running around 5-10 minutes. The scenes stand alone as complete short pieces, but they also connect to each other if your audience is paying attention! :) Read the short vignette descriptions here.
Staging:
For the premiere, we staged this outdoors, with the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future taking groups of audiences around to the scene locations. However, this can be staged indoors and also staged with a stationary set. Or any combination of those methods!
The audience enjoys an outdoor scene. Spirits led the group from location to location, sometimes accompanied by carols the musician would play.
Casting:
The play offers flexible casting. If you have a lot of interest and want a big cast, you can have 21 roles and unlimited ensemble parts (kids, teens and adults!). The whole family can participate. In fact, in the premiere, we did have parents and children acting in the production together! If you need a smaller cast, with doubling the play can be performed with 11 actors.
Genre:
The play is comedic, with tongue-in-cheek moments as there is blatant direct address to the audience and some self-referential moments. But there is depth, pain, longing, love, gratitude and lots more explored. It’s completely appropriate for any age, and is family friendly. The audience interaction isn’t limited to children or adults—there are moments for both and lots together! And of course, it’s a wonderful Christmas and Holiday play to get you into the spirit of the season while building community engagement and bonding! The new and redeemed Scrooge would approve of that! :)

This is a one-act comedy/drama running around 45 minutes, for 11-21+ cast members (lower cast size requries doubling. Large cast size includes non-speaking roles and unlimited ensemble roles for kids and adults)
