What is Reader’s Theater?
Reader’s Theater is a dramatic story (a play script) that people read together, with no goal of memorization, blocking or a production. There is no drama experience for teachers or children required! It is designed to make reading aloud enjoyable and beneficial for its readers. It is typically used in classrooms, where students are assigned roles, then break up into groups with their short piece of theater (2-10 minutes long). Students read the script out loud together several times, occassionally reading it before the class (TEACHERS—Reader’s Theater may even fall under your Common Core Curriculum. Check out Playbook’s Reader’s Theater document on how Reader’s Theater aligns with the Common Core Curriculum.). Reader’s Theater can promote fluency, confidence, creativity, empathy, oral expression and connections among peers. Children at home or in the classroom enjoy reading these fun scripts aloud.
