New Comedic/Dramatic Monologue about Love: Those Candies are in Our Favor

If you’re looking for a 1-2 minute comedic/dramatic monologue about love (and Valentine’s Day candy!), check out my new monologue, THOSE CANDIES ARE IN OUR FAVOR. In the monologue, Marnie can’t believe her boyfriend, Gavin, is going to decide the outcome of their troubled relationship by randomly picking a Valentine’s Day heart candy and reading its stamped-on message. She implores him to be mature and willing to talk about their issues—but it doesn’t seem that Gavin is feeling mature at the moment…

This is a fun monologue to perform, allowing an actor to go on a character journey and showcase a lot in a short amount of time. We have a glimmer of love, a hint of trying to smooth over a situation, possible guilt, irritation, a serious moment of relationship reflection, and ultimately disbelief, frustration and surrender. And all while looking at a bag of candy “conversation hearts!”

THOSE CANDIES ARE IN OUR FAVOR is great for an actor in her late teens through adult. It runs around 1.5 minutes (length always varies with performance). This monologue is written for a female actor, but suitable for any gender actor it resonates with.

You can check out an excerpt to the new monologue below.

MARNIE

(speaking to Gavin, her boyfriend)

Wait—Gavin—before you put your hand in that bag…I want you to think about it. And ask yourself this question: Is it fair, go into your Gavin-mind-space and ask, is it fair, to be putting our fate, our relationship future, in the hands of a little… a little heart-shaped piece of sugar? These are really designed for kids, aren’t they? I mean, some of them might be a little inappropriate for kids—like, “ur hot”… I think one says: “split rent,” and, I mean, there’s always been: “kiss me”…. Hm. Now that I’m thinking about it, maybe these candies are not really meant for kids… But my point is, they’re not supposed to be taken seriously. Okay? Look… I know you’re mad at me, because you think I cheated on you. But this is not how mature people handle problems—END OF EXCERPT
