The Blank Theatre's Young Playwrights Festival: Open for submissions

People have asked me before how I see theatre standing up to the next generation filled with such a high focus on technology, social media sans face-to-face connections, and a lack of interest in the arts. There are challenges, to be sure. There always have been, and there always will be. Theatre is not an easy medium...

Crafting a Winning Monologue Performance: Interview with Kamy Johnson, a Winner at Filmstock

It's always great to hear about an artist's success with one of my pieces, so I was happy to hear that actor, Kamy Johnson, received an award for Best Comedic Monologue, with my monologue, "Ferret Envy,"  at The Filmstock Film Festival in Arizona (check out her video at the end). Filmstock is film festival in the Phoenix Valley which screens fresh and entertaining shorts to its audience, and provides an engaging and rewarding festival experience to the artists. They even might throw in a little paint-bombing to boot! They've been around for 6 years, but 4 years in, they already made Movie Maker's top 20 short film festivals.  I am a huge fan of indie shorts, and this is definitely on my list for a trip to the SW...

WHITNEY

I cover my ears in the shower. I stand there—letting the water drip down my hair, my back. I turn into it. It flows down my face. It’s loud. Not like thunder. It’s…it’s…peaceful. Like…I’m swimming under water, in a lake, it’s dark and the rain is pouring down. It’s loud under water. But it’s quiet. Muffled.  Calm. There are no problems under water. There is no yelling. No hurt. No pain. Everything is erased. And no one knows me.  What I’ve done. What’s been done to me. I’m nothing under the water. And Nothing is…freeing. To me...

But there are some that don't get as much attention, and maybe deserve some exploration.  So here are three of this playwright's top films that you might not have heard of, but are worth a watch....

Video Games and Theater--Happily Co-Existing: Interview with video game company founder, Matt Udvari

The first time I met the very talented Matt Udvari, he was sitting in my graduate level Playwriting Class at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).  But Matt wasn't a Playwriting student; he was a graduate student in the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) at CMU.
